"It's like putting on a pair of Spanx," says Zeichner. "It helps thicken the skin to better hold in the bulging fat below." You're more likely to see long-lasting results with consistent use, but the instantaneous lift was, again, undeniable�and not just beneath my eyes, but on the lines near my nose as well. (It gave my lips a little plumpness, too.) Puffy the Eye Bag Slayer Wake-Up Under Eye Patches, $11; glossybox.com"They're rich in skin hydrators, antioxidants, and retinol, and this plumps the skin, reduces inflammation, and stimulates collagen growth," Zeichner says.

Sure enough, by the end of the 20 minutes that they were on, it looked like I had gained a couple more hours of sleep. Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Intensive Eye Contour Cream, $55; sephora.comAccording to Zeichner, a blend of botanical extracts and hyaluronic acid work to plump and hydrate puffy under-eyes.

I saw noticeable results within three days. As you can see, it was a great fix in a pinch�but sadly, not long-lasting. Within a few hours, the bags had returned. A little bit goes a long way since it spreads beautifully and melts right into skin. $105 ( ernolaszlo.com).If you notice fine lines around your eye whenever you smile, you have dynamic wrinkles�ones that show up as a result of movement and contraction of the muscles.

Because the solution definitely isn't to stop smiling, reach for this Allure-staffer fave. Amcella oleracea, a tropical plant extract, minimizes these microcontractions for smoother, less-lined skin. And if you're impatient like us, you'll appreciate the added algae extract that delivers immediate tightening. $60 ( dermalogica.com).You take a daily multivitamin for your body, so why not for your dark circles under eyes cream Here, a blend of collagen-boosting vitamin A, plus antioxidant vitamins C and E, work synergistically to help improve skin elasticity (and help prevent new wrinkles).

Silicones give it a silky feel and instantly smooth out even the tiniest lines and imperfections. Also nice: A quick dry-down, without any hint of greasy or sticky residue. $135 ( store.jessicawu.com).When a top dermatologist creates a skin-care product, you know it's going to be good, and this is no exception. It also means it may contain some ingredients you've never heard of.

In this case, it's superoxide dismutase (say that five times fast), a crazy-powerful and multitasking antioxidant that address wrinkles, circles, and puffiness. $24.99 ( olay.com).With a noticeably pearlescent finish, this looks more like a highlighter than an eye cream. When it's dabbed under the eyes, the brightness knocks out even superstubborn dark circles and minimizes how much concealer you need to use on top (even if you're sleep deprived and jet-lagged, like we were when we tried it).

But it's not just a quick fix: The niacinamide in the formula works to minimize dark circles over time. $65 ( restorsea.com for physician's offices).Blurring products are all the rage, but many are too thick to use on the delicate skin around the eye�the place where you often need it the most. Enter this option, which uses palm oil to smooth away pesky crow's-feet. Like the other products in the line, it also contains a salmon-egg enzyme (it's not as gross as it sounds) to gently dissolve dead skin cells.

Even if it didn't work, we'd keep slathering it on just to get a whiff of the clean, fresh scent. $19.99 ( cvs.com).If it's good enough for Salma Hayek, it's good enough for us. Case in point: this insanely rich balm from her line (it's so thick that you can turn it upside down and nothing will spill out). Credit a blend of heavy-hitting moisturizers�shea butter, macadamia oil, and coconut oil�along with a firming rose-petal complex.

Because it is so creamy, save it for nighttime use (it's also amazing on overnight flights). $40 ( aveneusa.com).Retinol is the biggest anti-aging player on the block when it comes to knocking out wrinkles, but it can be too harsh for the sensitive skin around your eyes. This multitasker uses retinaldehyde instead, a slightly different form of vitamin A that's gentler yet still effective.

Since it contains a retinoid, use it only at bedtime, when there's no chance of the ingredient being inactivated by the sun. And be sure to dab it around your lips as well to treat and prevent those unsightly "barcode" lines. $150 ( reviveskincare.com).If you've ever felt like the skin around your eyes is drier than the rest of your face, it's not your imagination. The skin is thinner in this area, meaning it's crucial to add moisture.

This longtime favorite touts both shea butter and hyaluronic acid to do just that�yet still absorbs quickly. But sunscreen can also be especially irritating if it gets in your eyes. Use a nondrippy or stick formula that won't migrate, says Jessica Wu, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles. Look for one that's especially formulated for the eye area, like RoC Retinol Correxion Eye Cream.

The vitamin A derivative will fade pigment and increase collagen production to make skin less transparent so dark circles are less noticeable. "Too-frequent application [of retinoids] can leave you with red, flaky rings around your eyes that turn brownish or gray as they heal, especially in olive or darker skin tones," says Wu.

She uses Renova, a prescription formula with a low retinoid concentration (0.02 percent, to be exact) that tends not to irritate the eye area. When you rub your skin to pry off your liner, you're causing inflammation and capillary damage�both of which can contribute to dark circles. Cleansing oils, like Freeman Eclos Daily Facial Cleansing Oil, melt eye makeup with the least amount of rubbing.

As a bonus, you'll lose fewer lashes, too. Arbutin, kojic acid, licorice, vitamin C, and daisy extract all interfere with the production of melanin without riling up sensitive skin.

A couple of formulas to try: SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum and Your Best Face Correct Eye Serum. If those don't fade the discoloration, a doctor can prescribe a cream with hydroquinone, the gold-standard�but potentially irritating�skin lightener. If you have allergies, the histamines released by your immune system can cause swelling and broken, leaky capillaries under the eyes.

Itchiness can encourage rubbing, which compounds the problem by prompting hyperpigmentation. An oral antihistamine (like Claritin or Allegra) can halt the reaction. In addition, caffeine-based creams, like SkinCeuticals AOX+ Eye Gel, help shrink blood vessels that can swell with an allergic reaction. Of course, if you want your dark circles to perform an instant vanishing act, there's concealer. The right one will make you look younger and rested and hide the fact that you ordered a second martini last night.

Makeup artist Laura Mercier recommends creamy solid formulas: "They provide more coverage [than liquids] and don't wear off as quickly." If you look in any makeup artist's kit, you'll probably see at least one of these two concealers: Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer and Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage.

"Concealers with peachy undertones neutralize the blue tint in most dark circles," says makeup artist Jillian Dempsey. "Avoid anything that looks remotely yellow in the pot�it'll stand out like highlighter on skin." Otherwise it'll cake, says Mercier. Swipe a little on your finger, press it against the back of your hand to remove the excess, and then tap it over shadows.

"Start where skin is darkest, and blend out from there for the most natural look," says Dempsey. But stop short of the lower lash line, where even 20-year-olds have fine lines, and steer clear of crow's-feet. Concealer will settle into those lines and exaggerate them. Chances are you've got dark shadows around the inner corners of your eyes (right next to your tear ducts), so pat a little concealer there, too.

"Blend it down the sides of your nose just enough so you don't have obvious circles of makeup smack-dab in the middle of your face," says makeup artist Pati Dubroff. "I see a lot of women who don't do that, and it always looks odd." If you do all this and still look like you pulled back-to-back all-nighters, you need to do some preconcealing concealing.

"The only way to brighten up really dark circles is by prepping skin with a peach-colored cream base called a corrector," says makeup artist Bobbi Brown. Apply it with a dampened makeup sponge so it's sheer ("It won't be Hermes orange," says Pecheux) and then tap your dark circles under eyes cream concealer on top. We like the Lancome Le Correcteur Pro Concealer Palette because it contains a peach color corrector and a solid concealer. "A shimmering nude cream or powder shadow can brighten up your eyes, as long as it's a touch darker than your skin tone.

If it's lighter, it looks frosty and dated," says makeup artist Troy Surratt, who likes Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color because it's got a fine (i.e., not cheesy) shimmer. When your lashes are turned up, they don't cast a shadow on your undereye area. And, of course, curling your lashes makes your eyes look more open and minimizes the "I'm exhausted" effect of dark circles. � 2016 Conde Nast.
